Postcard from outer rim...

Started to paint it, got tired and bored with it in the process, so - at least a small preview... ...maybe some day I'll return to this theme and ressurect it. Not now though.

...gonna move it to scraps later (probably).

I think this is a promising pic. It has a story to tell. I get the feeling of a mining and refining community hovering above an inhospitible world.

I like the ominous presence of the station, but I wish it didn't overpower so much of the background.

I hope you do go back to this and continue with it. Once again, your work makes me itch to write. It tells a story and that makes it dynamic beyond the obvious technical and artistic skill you show.

I agree with Phoenix here that this is too much of a Gary Tonge style not to be referred to. Try to learn from what you see but not copy color schemes or styles.. develop your own :)

Nicely painted!

I disagree about those color schemes - colors are ours not gary tonges :)

its not a matter of agreeing or not, its more a matter of painting something that looks a lot like someone elses style. This can be done by shapes or colors etc. In this case Phoenix is saying that the overall style and color of the image is very similar to that of Tonge's usage.

No biggy but its good to point it out so you keep true to your own style :)

Yeah, I think I understand you on that - you mean all those things together - on that I agree... ...I'm just still developing my painting style (I think I already did a good job on space art scene :D and now I'm trying to add a new technique - digital painting) and trying to figure it all out. :)

Just because somebody else uses a certain style doesn't make it their own. If you are developing into or trying another way or form then work with it. I can't say that I know of a single artist that claims that the way they do things or a certain style belongs to them. These people are purists that expect something completely different from everyone. Variety of methods tried and practiced is what makes an artist well rounded and skilled.

Looks good the colours are nice, I do see a huge influence by Gary Tonge though try not to fall into the trap of copying the style exactly. Your getting better at this stuff keep at it.

It's impossible to copy it without adding a bit of own touch in the process (at least I hope). Furthermore - the main reason why my pieces look a bit like GT works is the use of these colors.
Thx.

I think the colours are what make it look so similar but also the kinda smooth flow of the structures as well as the smooth reflective surfaces

Looks good, even if it is unfinished. The perspective on the structure is a bit wonky, but that might just be because of the angle. Did you make a base render first, or you freehanded it?

:iconjoeyjazz:
JoeyJazz Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
freehanded - with some circular tool help, but in the end yeah - one of the main problems is with that structural inconsistency :D

Yeah, not bad for freehand but still a bit off  , not a huge deal, especially in an unfinished piece ;)
Love the colors.
